Migrants are the only completed friendly/neutral unit in the Zombie Fortress gamemode. They are "survivors" whom you can recruit and control.

Spawning

After a player builds a quarters, a migrant will spawn during the day. They will enter from the left or from the right of the map. If left unattended, they will most likely end up victims to the zombie horde, due to the fact that they are unarmed but for their hands.
By default, a migrant spawns with 3 hearts, 200 wood and 35 arrows. Therefore, it might be good to recruit some if you lack resources. The AI is not very advanced, so a migrant may be unable to pass many obstacles. Luckily, you can pick one up and carry it by pressing [C].

Recruitment

To recruit a migrant, you have to carry/lead him/her to a quarters. When there, you may press [E] to recruit. After recruiting a migrant, he/she will turn into an NPC ally with the builder class. To change the class of a NPC, you have to first press [R] to control it. Then, you have to move to a knight armory or an archery range. When there, you may press [E] to change. A bot is able to defend itself with the designated weapon of its class. However, since bots don't have an advanced AI, you might want to watch them from time to time to ensure they don't die.

Movement

An unrecruited migrant can move by him/herself, but favors the direction where the player is located. After recruiting a migrant, you can hover your cursor over him/her while holding [R]. This will create a line from the migrant to your cursor. Now, you have two options: to move the migrant to a specific spot or to make him/her follow you. To move the migrant: simply move your cursor to the location you want the migrant to move to and release [R]. To make him/her follow you: simply move your cursor on yourself and release [R]

Tips

  • You can hover your mouse over the designated bot while pressing [R] to quickly control it, rather than having to scroll through bots when having lots of them.
  • For every migrant you want show up, you have to build a new quarters. However, you can recruit as many as you want in the same quarters.
  • Don't leave bots in the open.
  • Dead migrants and bots will turn into zombies when killed. You should therefore destroy or dump dead bodies outside your defenses.
  • If having bots when dying, you will be resurrected in control of a random bot, rather than losing.
  • NPCs make emotes (sad face or question mark when hurt or stuck, happy when being led by player).
  • Migrants scream when they see zombies. It could be possible set up an alarm system of migrants to detect zombies.
